Why Fastener Selection Matters
Fasteners are often an afterthought — but choose the wrong one and you risk joint failure, corrosion, or a stripped thread that costs far more to fix than the fastener itself. Whether you're fixing structural steelwork, assembling machinery, or securing cladding, the right fastener for the application is a fundamental part of the job.

1. Material: Matching the Fastener to the Environment
Material choice is the single most important factor in fastener selection, particularly in the UK where damp and corrosive environments are common.
- Mild steel (zinc plated) — General-purpose indoor use. Zinc plating offers basic corrosion resistance but will rust in wet or outdoor conditions over time.
- Stainless steel (A2 / A4) — A2 (304 grade) suits most outdoor and marine-adjacent applications. A4 (316 grade) is fully marine-grade and resistant to chlorides — use where salt exposure is a factor
- Self-colour (black oxide) — Minimal corrosion resistance; primarily for indoor mechanical assemblies where appearance matters.
2. Bolt and Screw Grades: Understanding Strength Ratings
For structural and load-bearing applications, the grade (or property class) of a bolt determines its tensile strength.
- Grade 4.6 — Low-strength general-purpose bolts. Suitable for light, non-critical assemblies.
- Grade 8.8 — The standard for most structural and mechanical applications. Good balance of strength and ductility.
- Grade 10.9 — High-tensile; used in automotive, heavy machinery, and high-stress joints.
- Grade 12.9 — Maximum strength; used in precision engineering and critical structural connections.
Note: Higher grade bolts are harder and less ductile — they can fracture rather than deform under overload. Always match the grade to the design specification.
3. Head Styles: Choosing for Access and Application
The head style affects both the drive method and the load distribution at the joint surface.
- Hex head (HH) — The most common for structural bolts; driven with a spanner or socket.
- Socket cap (Allen/hex socket) — Compact head for confined spaces; driven with a hex key or bit.
- Countersunk (CSK) — Sits flush with the surface; used where a flat finish is required.
- Pan head — Low-profile dome head; general-purpose machine screws.
- Flange head — Built-in washer face distributes load; useful where a separate washer isn't practical.
- Button head — Low-profile rounded head; often used for aesthetic or low-clearance applications.
4. Thread Types: Coarse vs. Fine
- Coarse thread (standard metric) — Faster to assemble, more tolerant of dirty or damaged threads, and less prone to cross-threading. The default choice for most applications.
- Fine thread — Greater thread engagement per unit length; better for thin-walled materials, precision adjustment, and vibration-prone assemblies.
- Self-tapping screws — Cut their own thread into the parent material; used in sheet metal, plastics, and thin sections.
- Thread-forming screws — Displace rather than cut material; stronger thread engagement in softer materials.
5. Washers and Nuts: Don't Overlook the Ancillaries
A bolt is only as good as its mating components.
- Flat washers — Distribute load and protect the surface beneath the head or nut.
- Spring (lock) washers — Provide resistance to loosening under vibration.
- Nyloc nuts — Nylon insert prevents loosening; suitable for vibrating assemblies but not for high-temperature applications.
- Serrated flange nuts — Integral locking without a separate washer; good for production assembly.
6. Application Quick-Reference
- Structural steelwork (indoor) — Grade 8.8 hex bolt, zinc plated, with flat and spring washer.
- Outdoor structural fixing — Grade 8.8 hot-dip galvanised or A4 stainless.
- Sheet metal assembly — Self-tapping pan head, zinc plated.
- Marine or coastal environment — A4 stainless throughout.
- Vibrating machinery — Fine thread with nyloc nut or thread-locking compound.
- Electrical enclosures — Brass or A2 stainless to avoid galvanic corrosion with aluminium.
